Mayor Daley has been a critical partner of Chicago’s philanthropic community, working closely with MacArthur and other foundations to improve the City and the lives of its residents. He understands that a prosperous city requires strong alliances with shared goals across all sectors.

His love of the City is so evident, as is the passion he brings to the role of Mayor. He values Chicago’s many diverse and wonderful neighborhoods, directing city investments in community development, housing, and infrastructure as anchors to spur investments by others and improvements that benefit all residents. He is truly Mayor for the whole city.

MacArthur has been pleased to work with Mayor Daley on community development efforts in 16 of the City’s troubled but promising neighborhoods and on his historic Plan for Transformation of public housing, both of which have become models for other cities across the country.

Mayor Daley has also been an consistent advocate for the arts, making Chicago one of the best-known cities for culture in the country. He understands the important role arts and culture play in the successful development of our economy, our neighborhoods, and our residents. He has created an environment in which the City works shoulder-to-shoulder with cultural organizations, businesses, foundations, and others to make arts and culture a centerpiece of Chicago community life, a magnet for tourism, and a generator of economic development.

Today, Chicago is seen not only as a leader on many of these important issues, but also as an innovator. I applaud his years of service, his commitment to Chicago, his vision, and his willingness to act boldly.
