Stephanie Bell-Rose, a corporate, philanthropy, and governance professional, was elected to serve on the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s Board of Directors. She will join the Board at its June meeting.
Most recently Bell-Rose was Senior Managing Director of the TIAA Institute, where she led work supporting research and knowledge building to improve effectiveness of nonprofit and educational organizations.
“Stephanie’s breadth and depth of leadership and advocacy have strengthened not only organizations she has been directly involved with but the philanthropic sector as a whole,” said Board Chair Dan Huttenlocher. “I look forward to her leadership on MacArthur’s Board.”
She serves on the Boards of numerous organizations, including the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Association of Black Foundation Executives, and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. She also co-founded and serves as Board Vice President of the Steve Fund, a nonprofit promoting mental health of young people of color.
“Stephanie brings deep insights and experience in philanthropy and finance. Her leadership has advanced diversity, equity, and inclusion in the philanthropic sector and the investment field,” said MacArthur President John Palfrey. “I am thrilled to welcome her to the Board and know we will all benefit from her knowledge and expertise.”
Additionally, Bell-Rose is a trustee of Payden&Rygel, a Los Angeles-based mutual fund complex, and a member of the Independent Directors Council, where she sits on the diversity working group charged with accelerating equity and inclusion in the investment company field.
Her memberships include the Council on Foreign Relations, the New York City Women’s Forum, and the Executive Leadership Council (ELC). Prior board service includes the Urban Institute, National Urban League, Council on Foundations, and the ELC.
Previously, Bell-Rose served as the founding President of the Goldman Sachs Foundation and legal counsel and program officer at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Bell-Rose received AB, JD, and MPA degrees from Harvard University. She is originally from Brooklyn, NY.
Bell-Rose joins eleven other members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. MacArthur’s Board sets policies and strategy for the Foundation; approves grantmaking areas, initiatives, and grants; and oversees investments and the audit process.
