
Representation of immigrant characters who are Black, Asian American, or Pacific Islander on TV has doubled since 2020, according to a report from grantee Define American. However, there are fewer Latinx characters and representation is not always accurate: 40 percent of immigrant characters were associated with crime. The report examined portrayal of immigrant characters on 79 scripted TV shows and surveyed viewers about shifting attitudes toward immigrants. The report found people who watched shows with strong representation overall had greater understanding and more positive attitudes toward immigrants in the U.S.
