Disinformation is one of the most prominent concerns about AI in elections, but it has also been deployed to counter disinformation, engage voters, conduct political research, and produce campaign materials. Grantee Ada Lovelace Institute explored how AI was used in elections in the first half of 2024, in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Portugal, South Africa, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Their tracking identified five categories of use and broke down the types of disinformation it produced. Ada Lovelace Institute notes many remaining questions, including how AI will change how politicians engage with constituents.
