Residential Proptech, or the technology and algorithms behind many housing decisions, was supposed to make it easier to build new housing, find housing, and expand ownership in marginalized communities. But according to a report on Proptech from the TechEquity Collaborative, it is primarily reproducing societal bias and making it more difficult to enforce fair housing laws. The MacArthur-supported report examined the Proptech industry’s growth and identified risks for amplifying inequities. It found promising intervention points to mitigate harm and create opportunities through both corporate policy and government regulation.
