Since 2021, India’s electricity consumption has risen 9 percent a year, with that increase accelerated by urbanization, rapid economic development, and climate-induced heat stress. The Council on Energy, Environment, and Water assessed whether and how India can meet electricity demand in 2030.
The study found that current plans for an additional 500GW of energy from non-fossil fuel sources, like solar wind, hydro, and nuclear energy, will meet current projections. However, if the demand grows faster, India will need more renewable energy resources. The report addresses some challenges, like increased demand, transmission needs, land, and supply chain, and includes an agenda for the power sector transition.
