ProPublica mapped toxic pollution in U.S. communities based on EPA data. Pollution from industrial sites create toxic hot spots that bleed into residential neighborhoods and harms community health. The map shows 250,000 people live with chemical pollution that expose them to cancer risks in excess of EPA standards, an additional case of cancer for 1 in 10,000 people. The map also lets users see additional cancer risk over 1 in 100,000 people caused by industrial pollution. ProPublica, a grantee, shares stories and methodology that illuminate the danger.
