It is the fifth annual Index survey of member nonprofit news organizations across America, with nearly 95 percent of members completing it. This report on data from 2021 serves as a view into the sector’s meaningful trends, opportunities, and challenges to come. It found that local news outlets have increased rapidly in the last years and endured through crises. The organizations reported a range of data from diversity in the workplace, their impact during crisis years, and challenges and opportunities. The MacArthur-supported report helps collect information that will benchmark developmental status and better understand new media models as they form.
