The economic future of the Midwest rests, in part, on U.S. immigration policy, according to a report by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, which convened a 53-member bipartisan task force to educate Midwestern leadership and enhance public understanding of immigration’s importance to the region’s economic future. The report states that the twin realities of a struggling industrial base and population decline in the Midwest demand a rethinking of how the country and region attracts and retains human capital. The task force puts forth recommendations for moving the region and country toward a more immigrant-supporting, economically successful future.
