While some artificial intelligence tools aim to reduce bias in hiring, data-driven decision making may perpetuate institutional biases, according to a report from Upturn. The report on hiring algorithms and equity analyzes AI’s impact throughout the stages of hiring, from who sees a job listing to who gets selected for interviews and from how interviews are interpreted to the quality of a job offer. Upturn, a MacArthur grantee, recommends more transparency and scrutiny from vendors and employers about the use of AI in the hiring process to actively pursue equitable procedures.
