The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, ruled that Nigerian police violated the rights of a cab driver who was tortured and detained for 27 days without trial. The judgment followed the efforts of MacArthur grantee Legal Research Initiative, which argued that the man’s fundamental rights had been violated. The cab driver was severely tortured during his detention, resulting in partial paralysis of his left arm. The Court directed the Police to refrain from further action and pay damages of $7000. The Initiative is part of a Foundation-funded project for the domestic application of the United Nations Convention on Torture, Inhuman, Cruel and other Degrading Punishment.
