MacArthur-funded universities in Russia have been very successful in obtaining substantial additional funding through a major new Russian government grants competition in support of innovative educational programs. In the first two rounds of this competition (2006 and 2007), the Russian government received over 460 applications, and made 57 grants totaling $800 million, with awards to recipient universities ranging from $8 million to $40 million. The 57 recipients include 15 universities supported by MacArthur through the BRHE and/or CASEs programs. Russian Minister of Education and Science Andrei Fursenko, who oversees the competition, has indicated that the selection process for the innovation grants was modeled in part on the BRHE program. Another $800 million in grants is slated for distribution through the innovative universities program in 2008.
