The New Motor Voter Act will register Californians to vote automatically whenever they obtain or renew a driver’s license or other state identification through the Department of Motor Vehicles. California has an estimated 6.6 million unregistered voters; just 31.8 percent of eligible voters in the state turned out for the November 2014 general election, a record low. The law was informed by the work of MacArthur grantee the Brennan Center for Justice, among other groups. Oregon is the only other state to have passed such a law.
