Legal efforts by MacArthur grantee Article 19 helped bring about the release of a journalist unjustly imprisoned in Mexico for his efforts to document a civil rights protest. Highlighting lack of evidence and other violations of due process in Pedro Canche’s legal proceedings, Article 19 was able to secure his release, and the National Human Rights Commission has since issued a recommendation that the case prosecutor provide reparations to Canche for the 267 days he spent in detention.
