Bail reform in cities across the U.S., which reduces the number of people in jail simply because they cannot afford monetary bail, has not increased crime. A bail reform study of study of major offences from 2015 to 2021, from Brennan Center for Justice, compared 22 cities that implemented bail reform to 11 that did not. The report showed no statistically significant relationship between reform and crime rates. Based on the findings, communities seeking to support public safety should leave bail reforms in place while adding other effective public safety strategies.
