Nigeria courtroom

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the constitutionality of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act (ACJA)  after a legal challenge to the part of the Act that prohibits stay of proceedings in criminal cases such as corruption. The Court held that no court in the country, including the Supreme Court, has the power to stay proceedings in a criminal case. Stay of proceedings is often used by high-profile defendants to interfere with trials related to corruption. The ACJA was created following several years of legal action by Foundation grantee, Center for Socio-Legal Studies, and is a pillar of MacArthur’s On Nigeria work to reduce corruption in the country.
