A new law adopted last month by the Anambra State government in Nigeria includes reforms of the criminal justice system recommended by MacArthur grantee the Legal Defense and Assistance Project. The law limits the maximum period a suspect can be detained without trial to six months, requires prosecutors to share with suspects all statements and exhibits they intend to use in the prosecution of the charge, and incorporates the relevant fundamental rights guarantees in provisions relating to arrests and detention. The reform was initiated by the government following the publication of research on the challenges facing the State’s criminal justice administration by the Legal Defense and Assistance Project.
