With forecasts that the Chicago region will expand by nearly two million people by 2030 (25%), MacArthur grantee Chicago Metropolis 2020 has long advocated for a central entity to coordinate and guide northeastern Illinois’ growth and investments in its infrastructure. Recent legislation created a new organization—the Regional Planning Board—that merges the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC) and Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS); MacArthur has provided funds to help it organize. This new unified approach to planning has the potential to save the Chicago region money and vastly improve the quality of life for its citizens.
