Mexican law now outlines how rape survivors can access abortion care, a change due in part to the policy work of MacArthur grantee Grupo de Información en Reproducción Elegida. Under the previous version of the law, women were required to report rape to law enforcement officials who had the authority to allow access to abortion services, which more often than not were denied. The new law allows women to request abortion care directly from a healthcare provider and also allows adolescents age 12 and older to request and access abortion services in cases of rape without the need for permission from their parents or guardians.
