The Joffrey Ballet celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this month with a series of free public dance concerts in Millennium Park including performances at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Harris Theater for Music and Dance and South African gumboot dance performances in Crown Fountain. The Joffrey was founded in New York City in 1956 and settled in Chicago in 1995. Founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino created a uniquely American company of dancers for whom they choreographed original and socially relevant ballets.
