India’s highest court ruled recently that all marriages must be registered, irrespective of the couple’s religion. This will place added government oversight on an often-overlooked practice in the country. The Socio Legal Information Center, a MacArthur grantee, led efforts to focus the attention of policymakers and the judiciary on the problem of child marriage in India.
