The Illinois General Assembly passed a bill that requires five state agencies to use the Housing and Transportation Index developed by MacArthur grantee the Center for Neighborhood Technology when planning and making public investment decisions around the state. The agencies included in the Housing + Transportation Affordability Act of 2010 are the Illinois Housing Development Authority, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Illinois Finance Authority, the Illinois Capital Development Board and the Illinois Department of Transportation. The H+T Index, which reveals how housing and transportation costs vary across urban areas and the impact these variations can have on affordability for the typical family, is the nation’s most comprehensive assessment of household and transportation costs by location.
