The Ethnobotanical Society of Nepal (ESON), which is supported by MacArthur, has discovered 14 plant species new to the nation. ESON President Dr. Krishna Shrestha and a survey team recorded the status, richness, and diversity of plants in forest and agricultural lands in the Kangchenjunga-Singalila ridge, a region of the Eastern Himalaya where species diversity is vastly underestimated. The team discovered two new species of lilies, several grasses, and a new species of begonia. The Eastern Himalaya is one of eight biodiversity hotspots around the world where MacArthur focuses its conservation and sustainable development grantmaking. The Foundation supports ESON through The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, a joint initiative with Conservation International and other donors.
