The Catalyst Fund, a $1 million initiative by The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, is aimed at fostering strategic partnerships with major news outlets to support work by freelance multimedia journalists on systemic global issues. The MacArthur-supported fund will produce as many as 40 reporting projects over the next two years, and aims to attract additional funding support as the value of the partnership model is demonstrated. The fund was created to address the reality of commercial pressures on news outlets, the increasingly important role of freelancers, and the emergence of nonprofits such as the Pulitzer Center that are not constrained by the demands of daily journalism.
