The Framework for Values, Ethics, and Accountability in Nonfiction Filmmaking aims to reorient documentary film toward greater care and transparency in telling the stories by, for, and about vulnerable and marginalized communities. The six core values call on people to integrate anti-oppression into the work; be transparent in relationships; acknowledge positionality; respect the dignity and agency of people in the film; prioritize needs, wellbeing, and experience of all people associated with the film; and to treat potential audience members with dignity, care, and concern. From the Documentary Accountability Working Group and endorsed by nonprofit leaders in the field including MacArthur, the Framework highlights the ways filmmakers can bring values into the production process, from reflection to release and impact.
