The Just Tech Fellowship was awarded to six people to work on issues where social justice and technology intersect. Kim Gallon, Chris Gilliard, Christine Miranda, Clarence Okoh, Meme Styles, and Rua Williams received the unrestricted award of $250,000 over two years from grantee Social Science Research Council.
Their work ranges from immigrant organizing to police accountability, tech-enabled racial health disparities, novel surveillance systems, the discriminatory impact of algorithmic decision-making, and disability justice. John Palfrey, MacArthur’s President, noted they are creating “an opportunity to imagine and build an affirmative vision for technology that is rooted in equity and justice, and works for all.”
