When individuals were released from jails before trial as part of COVID-19 measures, there was no link to changes to violent crime, data indicates. CUNY Institute for State and Local Governance reports on updated findings on communities participating in the Safety and Justice Challenge, showing jail reductions can be implemented safely. Seventy-five percent of people released pretrial were not rebooked into jail, and 98 percent did not return to jail for a violent crime. Thoughtful criminal justice reforms enable cities and counties to take violent crime seriously while minimizing the harm of jails, keeping families intact, and communities safe.
