The MacArthur-supported Carnegie Airborne Observatory has launched a third-generation aircraft that has been completely overhauled to be the most advanced mapping and data analytics system in civil aviation. The observatory, which creates high definition maps of sensitive ecosystems, can now make more flights and reach twice the number of ecosystems, including in regions never accessed before. The additional data will also be used to support other research topics including animal habitats, carbon stock quantification, rainforest biodiversity, land use changes, and degradation.
