The Chicago Tool Library has turned an industrial warehouse in West Garfield Park into a trove of tools and equipment available to the community, receiving the 2024 MacArthur Creative Places Award for its efforts. The Tool Library provides equitable access to its collection of 50,000 tools, which range from jigsaws to ice cream makers. Launched in 2019, the membership-based organization has supported the creative endeavors of over 6,000 households and 85 community groups. Its services enable individuals in Chicago to use and experiment with equipment affordably and sustainably. With the tools, members and organizations have repaired homes, started businesses, created art installations, hosted festivals, and more.
The Creative Places Award is one of six Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards given annually by LISC Chicago. It recognizes projects that use arts and culture to serve community interests and advance social change.
