The Supreme Court of India issued its first major decision on freedom of expression on the Internet by ruling Section 66A of the Information Technology Act unconstitutional. The law made posting “offensive” comments on the Internet a crime punishable by a jail term of up to three years. The Bangalore-based Centre for Internet and Society and the Centre for Communication Governance at National Law University Delhi, both MacArthur grantees, supported legal efforts to challenge and argue against the law.
