Over the past year, MacArthur awarded more than $1.2 million to support research and collaboration on girls’ secondary education in the developing world. Four organizations received funding:
- The Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution was awarded $430,000 to advance the Global Compact on Learning by supporting multi-stakeholder collaboration and a research agenda on post-primary education.
- Pratham, an NGO focused on education in India, received $380,000 for two studies on post-primary education in India, with a focus on the needs and challenges of girls.
- The University of Maryland College of Education, International Education Policy Program will use its $350,000 grant to study barriers to women becoming secondary school teachers in three African countries and what can be done to overcome them.
- Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab was awarded $75,000 for a comprehensive literature review to identify what works as well as gaps in knowledge to improve post-primary education in developing countries.
