Background

Under the Population and Reproductive Health (PRH) program, we supported worked in Brazil from 1990 to 2002. The program focused on four aspects of women’s sexual and reproductive health:

  • Prevention of sexually transmitted disease
  • Ability to enjoy sexuality free from violence and coercion
  • Sharing responsibility between men and women for birth control, sexual health, and childcare

In that time, we supported 86 individuals through the Fund for Leadership Development and 72 organizations through our PRH grantmaking.

What We Evaluated

In 2002, we interviewed many sexuality and reproductive health experts in Brazil. They were asked to express their views on the changes in population and in sexual and reproductive health and rights in Brazil over the last twelve years, the period in which we provided significant support to advance policy in these areas.

The report aimed to inform national and local efforts to progress sexuality and reproductive health issues in Brazil. It was originally published in Portuguese for Brazilian audiences. We translated it into English to share with a wider range of colleagues: The Population and Reproductive Health Program in Brazil: Lessons Learned.

What We Learned

Between October and December 2002, 23 people were interviewed who had worked closely with the Foundation as individual or institutional grantees or advisors. They identified where they believe progress had been made and where there were still needs in relation to population trends, sexual and reproductive rights, and health policies. They also shared their insights about the challenges ahead.

The experience and ideas shared in the report provides insightful into what has—and what has not—been achieved. These perceptions provide a road map to guide individuals, organizations, and policy-makers who are committed to keeping alive and expanding the sexual and reproductive health and rights agenda in Brazil and are relevant elsewhere as well.
