In 2015, MacArthur announced the end of its Population and Reproductive Health grantmaking program and began to design strategies for exiting the field. In this paper published in Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters, staff involved in the exiting phase reflect on the challenges and lessons learned over the program's 30-year lifespan from the funder perspective. The program ran from 1988 to 2019 and provided $372 million to civil society organizations globally and in four countries: Brazil, India, Mexico, and Nigeria. Over the years, it also saw a shift in the field, from population control to women's health and rights to reproductive justice today, particularly regarding greater agency and autonomy for young people’s reproductive and sexual choices.
