Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative

Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative, founded in 2022 and based in Kinnear, WY, is Native-led nonprofit on a mission to restore buffalo to the Wind River reservation because of their cultural and environmental significance. The Initiative seeks to acquire land within the reservation, reintroduce buffalo to that land, and in connection, conduct community-revitalization and youth-education activities. The acquisition of new property gives the Initiative a headquarters and a starting point by which to provide the Wind River community a re-connection with buffalo and their role in the lives, health, and history of the Eastern Shoshone and the Northern Arapaho people who call Wind River home. This grant provides Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative with flexible support for general operations.
