The University of California, Santa Barbara, houses the Juvenile In Justice Project, which seeks to “visualize” the juvenile justice system. Founded and led by nationally-acclaimed photographer Richard Ross, the Project exposes the plight of young people in U.S. correctional institutions. In 2012 the Project produced Juvenile In Justice, a book of photographs and essays that has greatly increased public awareness of juvenile incarceration issues and contributed to demand for reform. The Project will use this grant to produce and publish another book, Juvie Talk, which will further document the voices and images of young people behind bars.
