The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the lead United Nations agency for population and reproductive health promotion; its mission is to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. The award expands and extends UNFPA’s Mexico work to promote the creation of new midwifery training programs, and improved access for midwives to the labor force. Under this award, UNFPA is working with San Luis Potosí state toward this end, and also providing technical assistance about midwifery to professionals from the health, education, and civil society sectors.

The United Nations Population Fund Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNFPA-LACRO) designs and implements regional efforts under the mandate of its global office, which advances reproductive and sexual health and rights around the world in accordance with global agreements such as the Sustainable Development Goals. UNFPA-LACRO partners with the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) headquarters and regional representatives to promote midwifery in the region. The project provides complementary funding for an award granted in 2016 and enhances efforts to help new midwifery schools adhere to international standards, strengthen the advocacy skills of players in four states, and support international learning visits to countries where professional midwifery is provided with an intercultural perspective in indigenous areas.

The United Nations Population Fund Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNFPA-LACRO) designs and implements regional efforts under the mandate of its global office, which advances reproductive and sexual health and rights around the world in accordance with global agreements such as the Sustainable Development Goals. UNFPA-LACRO partners with the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) headquarters and regional representatives to promote midwifery in the region. The project supports efforts to strengthen a national movement of midwives through a leadership program for young midwives, the training of midwifery teachers in competency-based education in line with ICM and World Health Organization guidelines and recommendations. It also updates information about midwifery in Mexico for international publications and strategies, and supports the development of public policy supportive of professional midwifery and its deployment in the public health system.
