Founded in 2016, Tallgrass Educational Films is a 501(c)3 that seeks to produce, develop, and distribute documentary programming that will educate the public on significant cultural, social, political, and historical issues. It produced Punch 9, a documentary celebrating the centennial of Harold Washington, who served as Mayor of Chicago from 1983 until his death in 1987. The Chicagoland Social Impact Campaign for Punch 9 utilizes the story of Harold Washington, the first Black Mayor of Chicago, to develop a robust impact campaign that will increase civic awareness and engagement. Tallgrass has developed a civics curriculum inspired by Mayor Washington to share with Chicagoans and Chicago Public School high school students. This X-Grant supports the convening of Chicago youth and residents to discuss and engage with the legacy of Harold Washington to stimulate civic participation.
