The Santa Fe Institute is a private, not-for-profit, independent research and education center that works to bring strong quantitative methods and a range of interdisciplinary perspectives to bear on significant questions for science and society. This grant funds an 18-month research project to examine the dynamics of cities as engines of economic growth and development, with a focus on the relationship between individual residents, their social networks, information and learning, and patterns of advancement and inequality. Building on a long-term data collection project in 7,000 informal settlements in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the research will generate new knowledge about the process of human development in urban environments.

Founded in 1984, the Santa Fe Institute is an independent research organization devoted to trans-disciplinary studies of complex adaptive systems in the physical, biological and social sciences. Topics range widely including cells, cities, financial markets, infectious diseases, and information networks. This grant will allow the Santa Fe Institute to continue to pursue cross-disciplinary, research, to collaborate with other institutions, and to develop insights into important social issues. The grant funds will be used for general support, including the Institute’s programs, workshops, faculty, scholars, and educational activities.
