Race Forward was founded in 1981 as an initiative to bridge efforts between analysts and activists by working with community groups, government, and national organizations to develop and implement policy ideas that advance racial equity. Its mission is to catalyze movement building for racial justice. In partnership with communities, organizations, and sectors, Race Forward builds strategies to advance racial justice in policies, institutions, and culture. The Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE), a project of Race Forward, is a national network of over 394 government entities in 36 states and the District of Columbia, working to achieve racial equity and advance opportunities for all. This award supports Race Forward and GARE’s continued engagement with the Safety and Justice Challenge’s (SJC) racial equity cohort, a partnership between four existing SJC sites and community organizations, who are committed to advancing racial justice in their communities with a focus on the criminal justice system. Race Forward provides training and technical assistance to the cohort, as well as supports peer-to-peer exchange and learning across these partnerships. This award also supports the cohort’s engagement with the GARE network.
Race Forward is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing tools and structures to help the general public, activists, and people working within governmental and institutional systems advance racial equity. This grant supports Colorlines, Race Forward’s publication, as it implements a new strategy designed to support its audience members in their personal journey to develop a racial justice analysis. The intended outcomes of this grant are more opportunities for the public to learn about and engage with the concept of racial justice through multimedia stories created and disseminated by Colorlines.

Race Forward is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing systemic analysis and an innovative approach to complex race issues to help people and system actors take effective action toward racial equity through research, advocacy, skill-building and leadership training. This award supports Race Forward’s Narrative, Arts & Culture department to publish Colorlines, a daily news website that explores and contextualizes current events and culture by centering the perspectives and analyses of people of color, and acknowledges a position against systemic racism in the United States as necessary for journalistic contextualization. During the racial justice uprising of 2020, demand is increasing for Colorlines’ journalism. The intended outcomes of these funded activities are more accurate, just, and inclusive news and narratives, produced by Colorlines, and the growth of audiences in the United States.
Founded in 1981, Race Forward is a national organization that brings systemic analysis to complex race issues to help people take effective action toward racial equity. With this award, the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE), a program of Race Forward, hosts a two-day convening in Chicago to assist the City of Chicago, Cook County, and the State of Illinois in developing a coordinated, cross-jurisdictional racial equity initiative.
Race Forward is a nonprofit organization that conducts research, produces media, and pursues advocacy to help organizations and people take effective action toward racial equity. It works with communities of color, across public and private sectors, to shift racial discourse and practice and to advance an inclusive multiracial democracy. This award provides Race Forward with flexible funding to support its daily news site Colorlines, which covers current events and conducts investigative reporting with a critical racial lens. Colorlines is one of only a few national daily news sites led by people of color and its audience is made up of people deeply engaged in issues of racial justice. The outcome of this grant is the creation and dissemination of multimedia journalism content that differs from and challenges the mainstream news narratives, and provides new information, ideas and analyses to address complex social issues.
