The Poynter Institute (Poynter) is an educational institution and research center that offers professional development opportunities for reporters and convenes events that address critical issues concerning the state of journalism. This grant enables Poynter to continue to offer regional workshops for reporters from local and national outlets, aimed at providing them with the practical skills, technical assistance, and access to sources they need in order to report effectively on local criminal justice systems and jail overuse. MacArthur funds would support staff and consultant costs for developing and organizing the trainings, convening expenses, and travel and lodging for the participating experts and reporters. The result of this grant would be that news outlets (in localities that are part of the Safety and Justice Challenge Network and beyond) will have more tools, resources, and capacity to produce in-depth and nuanced reportage on their local criminal justice systems.

The Poynter Institute (Poynter) is an educational institution and research center that offers professional development opportunities for reporters and convenes events that address critical issues concerning the state of journalism. This award enables Poynter to design and convene a series of regional workshops for reporters from local and national outlets, aimed at providing them with the practical skills, technical assistance, and access to sources they need in order to report effectively on local criminal justice systems and jail overuse. Poynter is also creating an on-line training course based on the regional workshops, and making it available via its “News University” platform. By giving reporters the tools, resources, and capacity to produce in-depth and nuanced news stories on their local criminal justice systems, the project serves to increase public awareness of the problem of jail misuse and overuse, stimulate interest in and demand for solutions, and contribute to momentum for change.
