Population Media Center

Population Media Center is an international NGO working worldwide to promote the use of effective communication strategies for promoting behavior change around social and health issues. In 2013, through a multi-partner project which included the MacArthur Foundation, the Population Media Center created two entertainment-education radio serial dramas on maternal and reproductive health, early marriage, gender-based violence, and girls' education for Nigerian audiences. With this award, the Center is evaluating the impacts of the most recent broadcast of the Pidgin-language radio serial drama Tafigawalo in four southern Nigerian states. To further increase reach and impact, the Center is also rebroadcasting both Tafigawalo and Hannunka Mai Sanda, a Hausa-language radio drama across a combination of six northern and southern states.

Population Media Center will research, produce and broadcast radio “soap opera” dramas, using proven communication techniques to educate listeners and thus promote changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. The topics will include improving maternal health, promoting youth reproductive health, and encouraging higher levels of girls’ secondary education.
