Since its founding in the 1970s, the Police Foundation has sought to improve policing in the United States through innovation and science. In partnership with the Vera Institute of Justice, the Police Foundation has been engaged since 2015 in a national initiative to explore ways to improve CompStat, currently the primary management and decision-making tool for law enforcement. A previous award supported a national assessment of CompStat approaches and the development of an improved prototype, CompStat360, designed to leverage change in police-community relations and track outcomes that reflect procedural justice, legitimacy, and organizational effectiveness as well as public safety. This award supports a multi-site demonstration of the CompStat360 approach, a process assessment of the demonstration initiative, and the development of implementation resources enabling communities across the country to adopt CompStat360.
Since its founding in the 1970s, the Police Foundation has sought to improve policing in the United States through innovation and science. In partnership with the Vera Institute of Justice, the Police Foundation has launched a national initiative to explore ways to improve CompStat, the primary management and decision making tool for law enforcement. This award supports the planning process to study what has worked in CompStat and to transform the current model into a tool that leverages change in police-community relations and tracks outcomes that reflect public safety, procedural justice and legitimacy. The activities include researching national developments in police management, hosting focus groups on advances in the field, and identifying potential locations for testing pilots of the new prototype.
