Established in 1887, the Newberry Library is an independent private research library dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge, especially in the humanities. It is free and open to the public. Its collection contains 1.5 million books, 5 million manuscript pages, and 500,000 historic maps, making it one of the largest and most important libraries of its type in the United States. The Newberry Library is well known for its Native American and genealogical holdings. It offers exhibits based on its collections, as well as theatrical performances, lectures, and discussions. The Newbery Library also operates a research scholars program and professional development opportunities for educators. It collaborates with organizations in Chicago and beyond to make the humanities more accessible and relevant to diverse audiences. This award provides general operating support to the Newberry Library as part of the Foundation’s Culture, Equity, and the Arts program.
