The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (Association) is the oldest and largest nonprofit Association devoted to the delivery of legal services for those who cannot afford legal representation. Founded in 1911, the organization advances equal access to justice through advocacy, training, and technical assistance for civil legal aid and indigent defenders. This award supports a convening hosted by the association to explore the development of performance indicators for public defense services. The Association expects to hold the convening in October 2023 in Chicago, Illinois.
The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) is the oldest and largest nonprofit Association devoted to the delivery of legal services for those who cannot afford legal representation. Founded in 1911, the organization advances equal access to justice through advocacy, training, and technical assistance for civil legal aid and indigent defenders. This award supports the Association’s kick-off event and communications campaign commemorating the anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case, Gideon v. Wainwright. These efforts allow NLADA to leverage the 60th Anniversary as an opportunity to broaden national dialogue about public defense and importance of defense counsels in playing strategic roles in the reduction of jail populations.

As a strategic ally, the Association connects and cultivates defense leaders from SJC Network sites, uses multiple communication channels to disseminate information on racial equity and jail reduction efforts, and collaborates with other strategic allies to build momentum toward justice systems reform.

The Association’s project focuses on the distinctive leadership role defenders can play in the initiative in reducing racial disparities and fostering community partnerships.
