The National Juvenile Defender Center’s (the Center) mission is to ensure excellence in juvenile defense and promote justice for all children. This award enables the Center to enhance a 2-day program commemorating the 50th Anniversary of In re Gault, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision recognizing a child’s constitutional right to counsel. This award supports the Center’s efforts to: (1) organize and convene a panel featuring the role of the Department of Justice in safeguarding access to justice for youth; and (2) complete a 50-state snapshot on access to counsel and implement a communications effort to share this resource more broadly.

The National Juvenile Defender Center’s mission is to ensure excellence in juvenile defense and promote justice for all children. The Center has participated in Models for Change since its inception, taking the lead in helping states build and strengthen the capacity of the juvenile defense bar. As an anchor institution of the Models for Change Resource Center Partnership, the Center has encouraged national replication and adaptation of innovations in juvenile defense policy and practice. The Center will use this grant to secure a sustainable forum for key policymakers and practitioners to learn about innovative policies and practices.

The Center has participated in Models for Change since its inception, coordinating the Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network and taking the lead in assisting states build and strengthen the capacity of the juvenile defense bar. The Center will use this grant to support the replication and adaptation of Models for Change innovations in juvenile defense policy and practice on a national basis.

The National Juvenile Defender Center’s (the Center) mission is to ensure excellence in juvenile defense and promote justice for all children. It is the only organization in the United States devoted solely to improving access to counsel and the quality of representation for children in the justice system. The Center works with individual front-line juvenile defenders and offices, and a national network of regional defender centers, providing them with the tools, support, and skills needed to improve juvenile defense policy and practice. The grant will help secure the Center’s leadership role in juvenile justice reform, enabling it to (1) establish an operating reserve; (2) improve its technology infrastructure and enhance its communications; and (3) strengthen operations.
