The How Housing Matters to Families and Communities competitive research program is a multi-year, Foundation-supported effort to build a body of evidence to guide U.S. housing policy and practice. Although the cost of creating healthy housing is borne by the housing industry, the benefits accrue to the health care industry through prevented and reduced illness and injury. The National Center for Healthy Housing will use this grant to test whether healthy housing improvements will significantly reduce Medicaid expenditures as a result of reduced health care utilization and improve general physical and mental health for low-income residents with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
