People's Tech Project

The Movement Alliance Project works to build a healthy movement ecosystem where organizations succeed in making transformational social change. People’s Tech Project (PTP), housed within Movement Alliance Project, helps community-based organizations and social movements working for social and technology justice to win a future where technology helps build dignity, justice, and liberation, rather than exacerbate oppression and harm. Its purpose is to ensure that social movements contend with the impacts of technology both on the human condition and on the strategy they are building for human liberation. The award supports staff leadership development at PTP.

People’s Tech Project (PTP), housed within Movement Alliance Project, helps community-based organizations and social movements working for social and technology justice to win a future where technology helps build dignity, justice, and liberation, rather than exacerbate oppression and harm. Its purpose is to ensure that social movements contend with the impacts of technology both on the human condition and on the strategy they are building for human liberation. PTP tracks the impacts of technology on historically marginalized communities; partners with communities to co-create a shared positive vision of technology as part of human liberation by facilitating and supporting vision development in collaboration with movement leaders; embeds directly with issue- and community-based movements and campaigns by providing analysis of harmful technologies; and ensures the technology policy movement is accountable to grassroots social movements and their vision. The award to PTP provides flexible support to the organization.

Media Mobilizing Project (MMP) brings together justice, faith, worker and community groups to win measurable victories for digital inclusion, corporate accountability, and against digital interventions into human dignity and power. Through its work, MMP seeks to amplify the voices of communities fighting for justice, equity and human rights. The award provides general operating support to MMP as it expands its efforts seeking to advance greater community engagement and control over the deployment and governance of automated decision-making systems at the local-level across the U.S. Central to this work is establishing stronger links between community based organizations and data scientists who can advise organizations on technical aspects automated decision-making systems.

The award supports a convening of data scientists and community organizers to discuss ways to more strategically work together in efforts to advance justice and accountability in the design and governing of algorithmic decision-making systems.
