Although reading and science skills and knowledge are considered to be important components of participation in videogame culture, there are few empirical assessments of these claims. Morgridge Institute for Research, whose goal is to accelerate the movement of science from laboratories to public use around the world, will use this grant to examine learning associated with online videogame play, and publish and share the findings of that research. In addition, the grant will be used to examine how a popular massive multiplayer game, RuneScape, affects the reading skills of middle and high school students.
