JustLeadershipUSA’s (JLUSA) mission is to amplify the power of people directly impacted by the criminal justice system to self-organize and dismantle oppressive systems in their communities. Guided by the principle that “those closest to the problem are closest to the solution but farthest from resources and power to do anything about it,” JLUSA invests in the leadership of directly impacted people by educating, empowering, and elevating their voices so they have the tools and resources to advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities. The purpose of the X-Grant is to support a series of convenings through the Leading with Conviction™ (LwC) program, which brings together people directly impacted by the justice system and provides professional development and leadership trainings to support the career and personal advancement of people with lived experience. The LwC program consists of multiple in-person leadership training events, and it concludes with a graduation for individuals who have successfully completed all of the program requirements.

The renewal award enables JLUSA to further refine and pilot an executive-level training program that will prepare individuals directly impacted by the criminal justice system for careers in both public policy and senior leadership positions within public administration, nonprofit, and social and human services.

This general operating support award enables JLUSA to provide technical assistance focused on authentic community engagement and racial equity to the Safety and Justice Challenge Network (SJC), with a focus on the sites participating in the racial equity cohort.
Established in 2014, JustLeadershipUSA (JustLeadership) is a national organization dedicated to cutting the U.S. prison population in half by 2030 while building a network of formerly incarcerated advocates to lead justice system reform. JustLeadership seeks to integrate the voices of formerly incarcerated individuals in local reform efforts and in the broader national dialogue around justice reform. This renewal grant enables JustLeadership to continue its participation in the Safety and Justice Challenge (Challenge) to: provide technical assistance that is focused on community engagement to four Challenge Network sites; invest in leadership training of formerly incarcerated persons; and build coalitions with Challenge Network strategic allies and its leadership alumni.

Founded on the guiding principle that “those closest to the problem are closest to the solution,” JustLeadership empowers people and communities most affected by crime and incarceration to drive policy reform. JustLeadership seeks to integrate the voice of formerly incarcerated individuals in local reform efforts and in the broader national dialogue around justice system reform. This grant enables JustLeadership to participate in the Safety and Justice Challenge to: (1) disseminate information on successful local justice system reform efforts and innovative practice and policy to nontraditional stakeholders; (2) convene formerly incarcerated leaders from across the country to provide input and guidance on local systemic changes and strategies that systems stakeholders can consider in partnership with the broader community to achieve reform; and (3) develop a subsequent summary report and recommendations.
