The Johns Hopkins University Poverty and Inequality Research Lab (the Lab) is a mixeddmethods social research laboratory focused on examining the origins and effects of social stratification through the lenses of housing, family, education, and other social policies. Over the last three years, the Lab, led by Dr. Kathryn Edin and Dr. Stefanie DeLuca, has conducted inndepth interviews and ethnographic observations to answer the central question of spatial stratification: how and why do families end up living where they do? The dual approach of collecting data from families and from landlords and rental property managers has allowed the team to understand better how factors of both supply and demand combine to shape residential mobility patterns. Using these data-collected as part of early stage efforts of the MacArthur Foundation's Research Network on How Housing Matters-the Lab's research team has developed 14 separate paper topics that require additional coding and, in some cases, targeted fieldwork to bring the research to fruition. The papers supported by this grant will make a significant contribution to understanding residential mobility, segregation, and the role of landlords in shaping housing choice.
